The Ridley Island Energy Export Facility
REEF will deliver Canadian liquid petroleum gas (LPG) to in-demand global markets. Joint venture partners AltaGas and Vopak reached a final investment decision on the project in May 2024, and construction will begin this summer with the facility expected to come online in late 2026. The facility will be fully operated by AltaGas.
REEF is planned to be developed and brought online in phases – providing local construction and employment opportunities and mitigating the challenges that large development projects can have on communities.
What’s Planned
Phase 1 of the project will include LPG storage tanks, a new jetty and rail and logistics infrastructure. Initial capacity of the project will be approximately 55,000 barrels per day of LPG, including propane and butane.
In future phases, REEF will have the option to progress work on fuels of the future, such as hydrogen.
Community and Regulatory
AltaGas, Vopak and the Prince Rupert Port Authority have been working closely with Indigenous nations and key stakeholders, local communities and federal and provincial regulators, to deliver a project that will operate with a focus on safety, community benefits, and a strong commitment to environmental stewardship. We will work with communities throughout the project lifecycle – from planning to decommissioning.
Key determinations and permits have been received for REEF. For more information on these approvals, see the Resources section.
The West Coast Advantage
With only ten shipping days to the fastest growing demand markets in Northeast Asia, REEF will efficiently connect Canada’s vital energy products to the world. We call this the “West Coast Advantage” because it’s a shorter shipping distance compared to the minimum 25-day shipping time from the U.S. Gulf Coast to Northeast Asia.
The Port of Prince Rupert provides REEF with year-round ice-free operations and has one of the deepest natural harbours in North America, meaning it can accommodate the world’s largest vessels.
