Meet REEF
REEF will deliver Canadian liquified petroleum gas (LPG) – like propane and butane, methanol, clean petroleum products (CPPs) to in-demand global markets. Construction began in the summer of 2024 and the facility is expected to come online in late 2026. REEF will be fully operated by AltaGas.
REEF is planned to be developed and brought online in phases – providing local construction and employment opportunities and mitigating the challenges that large development projects can have on nearby communities.

What’s Planned
Phase 1 of the project will include LPG storage tanks, a new jetty and rail and logistics infrastructure. Initial project capacity will be about 55,000 barrels per day of LPG, including propane and butane.
In future phases, REEF will have the option to progress work on fuels of the future, like hydrogen.

About / Community and Regulatory
AltaGas and Vopak have been working closely with Prince Rupert Port Authority, Indigenous nations, local communities and federal and provincial regulators, to deliver a project that will operate with a focus on safety, community benefits, and a strong commitment to environmental stewardship. We will work with communities throughout the project lifecycle – from planning to decommissioning.
Key determinations and permits have been received for REEF. For more information on these approvals, see the Resources section.

The questions below were a result of questions that are top-of-mind for various Indigenous nations and key stakeholders in the project including community leaders, Indigenous communities, local communities and more.
If you have a question that hasn’t already been answered below – please contact us at reefproject@altagas.ca.
When will REEF be in operation?
We are currently estimating the project will be operational in late 2026.
Have you engaged Indigenous communities on the project?
Gitga’at First Nation, Gitxaala Nation, Kitselas First Nation, Kitsumkalum First Nation, Lax Kw’alaams Band and Metlakatla First Nation were consulted during the environmental assessment process and on any amendments the project has received. Additionally, all six Indigenous nations have been engaged on construction environmental management plans, the Emissions Mitigation Reduction Plan and Wetland Function Compensation Plan.
Any environmental or archaeological reports that are produced for the project are shared with Indigenous communities and REEF invites representatives from all six Indigenous communities to participate in on-site field investigations. Weekly construction updates are provided to all six Indigenous nations.
How were the Indigenous communities engaged during the planning process?

What about local job creation?
What is AltaGas’ experience moving propane and butane and how does the process work?
We’ve safely offloaded propane at our RIPET facility in Prince Rupert for almost five years and propane butane at our Ferndale Export Terminal for more than three years We extract propane and butane from the natural gas stream at our NGL liquids handling facilities in Alberta and in Northeast British Columbia.
After we’ve extracted the propane and butane, we load it onto railcars at our LPG extraction facilities. The product then moves via our rail partners to our export facilities, where it is processed and cooled before being loaded onto a vessel and exported to Asian markets – primarily Japan and South Korea.
